War-date Confederate officer's letter, 1p. 8vo., written by Capt. William Henry Holcombe 1st South Carolina (Orr's Rifles) Infantry, Orange Court House, Va., April 5, 1864, to his uncle, in part: "Billy Anderson [Sgt. William H. Anderson, surrendered Appomattox Court House, Va., April 9, 1865] has requested me to inquire of you about his recruit. He knows that he came as far as Columbia and then turned back. He says if he has no good excuse for not coming on you will oblige him [by] forwarding him at once and under guard if necessary, but if his reasons are good for turning back you are not to deal harshly with him. He wishes you to write to him as soon as you get this and let him know all about the matter. He is afraid the fellow is about to play off on him…everybody well except a few cases of pneumonia and measles…the boys are all in fine spirits and say they will whip Mr. Grant when ever he gives them the opportunity…W. H. Holcombe." Also included is the original transmittal cover. Overall VG.
