War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Mathew Halpin, [POW Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], Co. K, 22nd New York Vols., "Camp of the 22d N. Y. Regt. near Catlett [Station, Va.], June 13, 1862," to his friend Albert A. Fletcher, reading, in part: "…we left our camp at Fairview, 8 miles beyond Fredericksburg & marched about 50 miles to Catlet station where we took the cars & went to Front Royal. We stayed there overnight…got orders to go back as [Stonewall] Jackson had left there. We went back as far as Hay Market where we remained 3 days…there was a very serious accident…each regt had an engine & 10 cars. The sharp shooters were ahead. While stopping for something the engine of the Brooklyn 14th ran into them killing one & hurting about 40. We buried the one killed on the side of the road & the wounded were carried to the nearest village where the Regt. stayed until our return from Front Royal…the women in Warrenton have great opinions of the secesh. They would walk 1/2 miles cross lots to keep from going near the Union flag. One was bold enough to hand a Secesh flag out of the window. It was fun to see how we tore them while the women call the Yankees all sorts of names. A Col. from one of the [regiments] came over & told her if he put up another such flag he would not prevent his men from doing what they pleased. Well, he says that rag cant stand there as a color bearer hoisted the Stars & Stripes in…place where a secesh flag had been before. After a while we left taking our flag with us [and] the soldiers vowing if another flag was raised they would shoot at it until the[y] cut [it] down. Lieut. Huntly rejoined us while we were at Warrinton…there is some talk of combining the Regts. together…putting 2 Regts into one [and] discharging 1/2 the officers…[William] Frank Tilson [WIA Wilderness, Va., 5/6/64 & Petersburg, Va. 4/2/1865] that lived at Mr. Goodins is in the 2d Sharpshooters…Mathew." Also included is the original transmittal cover. VG.
