War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Mathew Halpin, [POW Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62,] Co. E, 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry, "Camp of the 2d Veteran Cavalry," [n. p., n. d., but Washington, Dec. 15, 1863] to his friend Albert A. Fletcher, reading, in part: "Yours of Nov. the 11th was duly recd…this is a large Regt &…one of the best mounted in the service. I had the 6th pick of 100 horses. We had 260 conscripts put in this Regt…they sprinkle all the Regts in the service with them…I wish you would send me a pair of boots & 2 flannel shirts by express…fine, double sole with keel irons & legs wide enough to go over the pants & long enough to reach 6 inches above the knee…direct to Sgt. Mathew Halpin, Co. E 2d Veteran Cavalry, Washington, D. C…Mathew." Also included is the original transmittal cover. VG
