War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Mathew Halpin, [POW Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62,] Co. E, 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry, "Camp of the 2d Veteran Cavalry," [Washington], Feb. 1, 1864, to his friend Albert A. Fletcher, reading, in part: "…we got orders this afternoon to turn in our horses & have done so. we embark for New Orleans tomorrow morn. The order came somewhat unexpectedly as we were on drill at the time…I shall send my discharge from the 22d Regt…I wish you to keep the discharge for me, as it may be of use to me sometime…Mathew."
