The letter is written by “Allen Shortledge” who enlisted 5/22/1861 he mustered into "E" Co. DE 1st Inf., datelined Camp Hamilton, Fortress Monroe, January 9, 1862. Writing to a friens, Shortledge advises that he enlisted and reviews news from Wilmington.
