War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 2/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Levi Miller, Co. A, 7th New Hampshire Vols., Fort Jefferson, Florida, March 9, 1862, reading, in part: "…we had a very pleasant voyage…we are out side of the fort at present…the fort will mount 5.60 guns when finished. There is but 90 mounted yet…it will take a pretty strong force to take it. We have trees here two kinds, the Coconut tree & Cedar…while I am writing the babies are crying…you will think it strange to have babies here but it is so. We have some Darkies here & they are blacker than the Devil…I don't know as I can say much for I am getting to bee about the color of Paul Brock, a good healthy color…the boys are having a good time. Some of them thought that they were lost, but they are all safe. We lost two men on the passage. One was buried at sea & the other on the land…Levi, direct to 7th Regt. N. H. V., Co. A, Fort Jefferson, Florida." Near fine.
