War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on 16th New Hampshire regimental stationery, by Pvt. Alonzo D. Davenport, Co. E, 16th New Hampshire Vols., Camp Parapet, Carrolton, La., Dec. 22, 1862, to his family, in part: "…we have news today from up the [Mississippi] river…they have been fighting. Some 1,000 wounded soldiers came down…on the boat to the hospital in the city today…we have moved…and have had a hard job of it…there is some very pretty Nigger woman (Contrabands) here. They do not wear any hoops and do not dress in the best of clothes. Some have oranges to sell, some…corn cakes or Johnny cake to sell. But many are around picking up hard tack that we throw away or anything that are eatables. It makes me mad to think that I am not as good as a Black man…we have to do the work and they lie low look at the Goose…the half breeds think that our potatoes are very nice…Lon." Some spotting, else VG.
