What do you think of that? We feel very bad but he wanted to go so bad we thought we would give our consent. He gets four hundred dollars bounty and 13 dollars a month. Charlie wants to see Pap before he goes very much. Why wont you try and come up before he goes? I don't know when he will have to go but I suppose in about a fortnight…you must excuse me from writing anymore…for I don't feel very smart. Come if you can wont you…love from your sister Julia A. Manning. Please write if you do not come." A model soldier, Manning achieved the rank of corporal before being discharged in December, 1865.
