War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. John French, [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62], Co. H, 11th New Hampshire Vols., Louisville, KY, June 13, 1863, to his sister, in part: "…when I was at Nashville somebody had the kindness to take about all of the money I had out of my pocket…this is a bad place to be laid up without any money…I have not had any trouble about my leg yet. I hardly think I will have it taken off this time as it has got almost well. You wanted to know how it happened…I and another man sent off with some deserters and we had them on the top of a freight car…about 15 miles the other side of Nashville…one of our men wanted something something to eat on our end of the car with our feet hanging off. As he got up his revolver dropped out of his pocket and fell down between the cars and went off the ball struck me on the under side of the leg that is about all…I had a hard time getting back here…in a week more I will be able to walk around quite well and you kneed not expect to see me at home this time. There was not anyone to blame about my getting hurt and I have been out today someways. Be sure and send that money and tell the folks not to feel concerned about me. John French." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall near fine.
