War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Hospital Steward Charles M. Trask,, Co. D, 5th New Hampshire Vols., "Camp near Falmouth, Va.", Mar. 30, 1863, to his brother, in part: "…Gov. Berry [Nathaniel S. Berry, 1796-1894, New Hampshire's Republican anti-slavery governor, 1862-1863] is now out here visiting the troops, more especially his N. H. regts. I know of none in this immediate vicinity besides ours except the 12th Regt, a shot distance from here. Our Divis. was called out in review at 1 p. m. before the Gov. Our regt. stopped after all had passed and the Gov. made a few remarks to us, said on his return to Washington he should try to get permit of the War dept. for us to go home if for only thirty days. That will be to good luck for us. Don't expect it. Gen. Sumner [KIA Antietam] being dead which we lament very much. I expect the Col's going to Arizona is all up for Sumner was to have command of that portion of the west and chose Col. [Edward] Cross [KIA Gettysburg]…Chas. M. Trask." Near fine.
