THOMAS, Lorenzo (1804-1875) was a career United States Army officer who was Adjutant General of the Army at the beginning of the American Civil War. After the war, he was appointed temporary Secretary of War by U.S. President Andrew Johnson, precipitating Johnson's impeachment. war dated Autograph Letter Signed “L. Thomas”, Vicksburg Miss, March 26, 1864, VG. In small part, “My duties haved increased and many abomnible cases come up to me until worried to death and sick at heart. My days under the orders of the President are most unpleasant for I see great wrong and oppression. ... Oh that I could at less leave this ruin and obtain rest for body and mind. ... It is night, my temples are throbing with pain ... pray therefore excuse the hasty note. ...” Accompanied by the original cover with a free frank signature “L. Thomas”.
