Federal soldier’s manuscript document written by Adjutant “John A(ndrew) Fox”, Tullahoma Tenn., March 22, 18643pp., VG. the introductory headline reads, “Description of Colors, Color Staff Belonging to the Second regiment Massachusetts Infantry” and continues with detail description of ten flags/staffs. As example, “I. ‘Large American Flag’ presented at camp Andrew by Hon. J. Lothrop Motley in behalf of friends of the regiment. This flag has been carried in every action since the Winchester retreat and will be carried as long as the regiment retains its organization.” And another example, “I Staff to flag presented by ladies of harpers ferry carried on the Winchester Retreat and for the large flag from after battle of Chancelors ville till Gettysburg - This staff is now with the regiment.”
