War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, U. S. Sanitary Commission stationery, by Corp. Zimri Whitney, 9th Massachusetts Light Artillery, "Park Station, Va.", [Manassas, Va.], Nov. 29, 1864, to his cousin, in part: "…everything has been very quite since the Election. The Rebs are deserting now by a continual stream. Not a day passes…without seeing some come into our lines since the reelection of Lincoln. They have made up their minds there is no compromise to be made so they take (that is the private soldier) the next best way to get out of it. I hope they will all desert before another spring…the Army of the Potomac, most part of it, has got nicely settled down in winter quarters, but I am mighty afraid they will get routed out before spring…soldiering here on a campaign in the winter in mud season is mighty disagreeable business…Zimri Whitney." The original stamped U. S. Christian Commission transmittal cover is included. Overall near fine.
