War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Ordnance Sgt. Thomas Goodrich, Co. C, 6th New Hampshire Vols., "Camp 6th N. Hampshire Vet. Vols., near Pegram House, Va.", Oct. 21, 1864, to his "friends", in part: "…we soldiers have but little time to call our own besides having been engaged in one of the most trying and severe campaigns ever inaugurated. It has been my fortune to pass through the whole unharmed. Since joining the Regt. I have been in every battle but the last (Popular Grover Church) this was owing to my promotion Sept. 1st, as Ordnance Sergt. of the Regt. which is…one of the best places in the Regt….as it does away with the fighting, guard duty, attending roll calls and the hundred little things that would otherwise be required. My health is very good…as is also my father's. [Pvt. Evander A. Goodrich]. He is expecting to go North in a few days having been examined by surgeons and pronounced "unfit for field service." Will probably go into the Invalid Corps at Washington [on Jan. 20, 1865]. Gen'l. Grant accompanied by Meade and other "high bucks" has just rode through camp receiving the salute of the blue-jackets. The boys have all confidence in Grant and believe him to be as smart as Robt. Lee "or any other man"…we received news from Sheridan that he had captured 43 pieces of artillery etc. which caused the air to ring with cheers. We are camped within plain sight of the enemy's works, but there is no firing on either side. We exchange papers daily and get the Richmond Examiner one day after publication. Deserters come in frequently. One of them said…that they were going to hold out until after Election (Nov. 8th) hoping that McClellan would be elected, when if Lincoln was re-elected they should give in knowing that he would fight it out to the bitter end. The Union Army is in fine spirits and receiving reinforcements every day. Copperheads don't grow out here. Talk about compromise-we will compromise through Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Farragut and so forth…nothing would give me greater pleasure than to receive a letter from Martha, Ellen & Lucid each…your friend, T. Porter Goodrich, Sergt. Co. C, 6th N. H. V. V., 9th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac." Minor spots, else VG to near fine.
