Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Castillion Springs Tenn. Dec. 13th, 1862, 6pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “... we got hrough Hartsville on Wednesday. The town is full of wounded who say they fought hard but Morgan was a little too strong and it was death to resist any longer. Yet it is reported that two Ohio regiments laid down their arms early in the fight. Morgan attacked them about sunrise and fought 55 minutes and then crossed the river before 10:00 o’clock and as his men were crossing, our forces came upon him and killed a few. ... three regiments are paroled and at Nashville. Believe it or not, there are more men in the army who would rather be taken prisoners than fight because they see in every instance that those who are taken prisoners get to go home ... I was rather sorry to hear of the President persisting in his policy of setting the Negroes free and inciting servile insurrections. ... but here we are like dogs ‘come when you are whistled for’. In fact we are not as well off as a slave ... Morgan attacked Hartsville ... for he not fool enough to wait until half the Northern Army collects around him to capture him, but he scuds out ...” The Battle of Hartsville was fought on December 7, 1862, in northern Tennessee at the opening of the Stones River Campaign the American Civil War. Hartsville Battlefield is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
