Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Murfreesboro Tenn., March 14 , 1863, 4pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “Bragg’s forces are within eight, and alas I am all too aware of the fact that when I hear the thunder of cannon belching forth death and dismay almost every day. there is no end of prisoners who pass along the road accompaned by guards, and most of them wear our clothing ... from these prisoners we learn that it is the intention of the army of Bragg’s to break through our lines and enter Kentucky again. ... Dozens occupying one grave. there are no hands here to bestow a little care on their neglected graves, the beasts tread over them, sometimes sinking their limbs into sacred tombs of the dead. ... It is for the salvage of our country plunged in peril and war by the hands of traitors who deserve the wrath of God. ...”
