Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Murfreesboro Tenn., March 29 , 1863, 4pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “Gen. Rosecrans has massed his force in very much less space than formerly.... I told you about the review of Gen. Crittenden’s Corps. it was grand. ,,, In the Army, no one does more than he is ordered to do. We are near a burying ground which is daily filling up .. We can go out .. see 12 or 13 coffins on top the ground almost all the time. There has been a hearse employed for about two weeks in carrying the dead from hospitals. It is constantly running ... the coming attack at this point will come off ... it will be a severe and desperate struggle for our men ... have to drive the Rebels at point of the Bayonet for they think they are fighting for freedom and fight well. ...”
