Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Jasper City, Aug 25th, 1863, 16pp., “J. H. G.”, in part, “During this time Bragg was advancing and we were up from three o’clock every morning to be ready for the enemy and it was ‘death to whisper’ while there was no enemy witin one hundred miles of us. But it trained us, for many a man went into the rifle pits trembling when he was told to shoot about the ‘knees of the enemy if he attempted to come up the hill we defended’. ... We embarked on the ‘Lady Pike’ and were on the water three days and nights when we arrived at Louisville. ... We knew that ‘bloody war’ was on the eve of a ‘mighty battle’. Away here far removed from civilization with no schools, no churches, it looks like Dan Webster was right when he was addressed thus by John C. Calhoun of S. Carolina,’Look Hon. Webster, there comesome of your constituents’ pointing to a drove of mules. ‘Yes’, replied Webster. ‘They are going down South to teach school.’
