Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, 101st Ind Vol., Ringgold Ga., Apr 24/64, 11pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “There was a little fight below here yesterday. The Rebels took our outposts and when the reserve charged on them and come near retaking our men, the Rebels shot the prisoners and fled, such appears to be the spirit of Rebel warfare! How terrible the the fate of the unhappy victims of Fort Pillow! If they have begun a war of extermination, we can work the same game. ... I feel better satisfied with Gen. Thomas than with Gen. Rosecrans. .. now we are led by a man who takes advantage of circumstances and strikes the hard blow in the right time for it to be felt and even if men have to go almost naked for a week or two, it is nothing more than Rosecrans’ men did on every occasion ... concentrating the three Corps under gen. Thomas, we will move on dalton ... where I expect a heavy hot battle. If we get to Atlanta we have then virtually cut the CSA into two and their case is hopeless. ... The first flag of truce that came here, some of the boys of this regiment forgot their duty and began to talk to the Rebs, and one of the boys of Co. F. asked a Rebel why he wore buttons with eagles on? The Reb replied ‘They are not eagles but Georgia Buzzards’.
