Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, 101st Ind. Near Chatahoocha River, GA., May 20, 1864, 4pp. with original cover “John H. Gray”, in part, “We have driven the Rebs back with rather small loss, but it will take hard work to move them out of Atlanta. The cars run up to Kingston. the Rebels had to fall back so fast that they have had no time to tear up the track. ... The prisoners we take are fat and plump looking fellows showing that Gen. Johnston takes much better care of his men than Bragg did and they like him better. The Rebels do not bury their dead but let them lay and rot, nor do they send us flags of truce asking to bury their dead. I have seen dead Rebels scattered along the road ever since they left Tunnel Hill. At Tunnel Hill they stuffed old clothes with fodder and straw making ‘paddies’ looking like men and putting them around like men on picket ,,,:
