Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Camp of 101st Ind. Jonesboro, GA., September 5th, 4pp., with original cover, light ink, “John H. Gray”, in part, “Well Hood was so blinded by our move that he thought this only a raiding party and he detached two Corps, hardee’s and Lee’s, after us to ‘Gobble us’ but on the evening of August 31st, 1864, thinking he had sent too many men away from Atlanta, he ordered two Divisions of Lee’s Corps back to Atlanta, so on September 1st our army pitched into one Corps and one Divion of another Corp under Gen. Hardee at Jonesboro and gave them one of the compleest whippings they ever received! Our success was complete. Our Corps took eight pieces of artillery and five hundred prisoners, part of which were done by the 3 Brigade and our 3 Divion. Our loss was pretty heavy, but if we could have had two hours more daylight, we would have had the entire Rebel force captured. ... Hardee telegraphed to Hood that he had been driven from Jonesboro. So Hood thought over it and on 3 o’clock on the morning of Sept 2nd he blew up his magazine and eighty carloads of ammunition and evacuated Atlanta. Our forces marched in at 11 AM thus accomplishing what we had intended to when we left Ringgold just four months ago. These four months of incessant warfare have learned us more in the art of war than reading all the military tactics that were ever written. ‘Sherman ids the fish and Hood the tadpole’. His Rebel army is again together but badly demoralized, out generaled and whipped! ... The Rebels left their dead and wounded on our hands. Their hospitals were all full, and there a good many fell into our hand. We have dead and wounded to more than I thought when I wrote my last.
