Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Camp of 101st Ind. Near Savannah GA., December 14th, ‘64, 12pp., , in part, “As we left Kingston Ga. on the 12th of November ... crossed rivers, tore up railroads, robbed hen roosts and smoke houses ... left thousands of women and helpless children to suffer, if not perish out right with hunger and cold for every bed was robbed of its quilts and comforts and the feathers scattered to the winds. most all mills and fine houses were burned to the ground. .. no doubt but our path resembles the trail of the locust in the land more than the march of a civilized army. Then too the thousands of slaves we passed told too well the terrible tale of African slavery, but I hesitate to tell it of our soldiers, still it is true. Thousands influenced by brute passion mistreated and covered themselves with shame and eternal infamy by committing rape, not upon white woman but upon poor black wenches. Please omit reading the above to anyone. ... Atlanta I saw laid in ashes. I have seen a city on fire and the terrible red blaze apparently strike the sky from Miledgeville to Louisville to Waynesboro to Jacksonboro to Savannah. ...”
