Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Chattanooga, April 3rd, (1864) 4pp., with original cover, in part, “The distraction of everything between here and Ringgold ... fences torn down, bridges burned, all houses burned or torn down. there is no trace of civilization. ... Rich men are living here eating what little our own commissary may be pleased to issue them. Their bodies go unclothed. ... That which has been worn out and cast away is taken up and worn again. ... Their riches are gone. They have fallen from a position of princely splendor to a beggar’s position! Not so with their slaves. Government gives them nice new clothes, plenty to eat and comfortable quarters to live in. Now the slave woman lives better than the mistress. the slave better than the master ....”
