Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Adjutant’s Office 101st Ind Vols. Goldsboro NC, March 26, ‘65 6pp., , in part, “This campaign is successfully ended after sixty-four days of the hardest service I have experienced. ... we had great swamps of the Carolinas to traverse, the biggest rivers to cross such as the Savannah, Great pedee, Edisto, Broad, Catawaba, and Neuse. ... We first threatened Augusta but did not take it. We moved on Columbia and razed it level with the ground, thus destroying a fine city, the Capital of the ‘Mother of Traitors’. ... After leaving Columbia we headed for Raleigh but fell short by stopping at Goldsboro. ... Almost every house that was left standing was robbed ... This is the only objection I have against Sherman’s raids, viz., the suffering it brings to so many innocent women and children ... We have compelled them to evacuate Charleston, Wilmington without a blow ... Rebellion is fast on the decline ...”
