A rare Union veteran's partly-printed, 2pp. oblong 8vo., order form for a colorfully painted military certificate escutcheon by J. P. Reynolds & Co., Broadway, NYC, in which Capt. Edward D. Bean, 2nd New Hampshire orders his version of these often encountered military certificates. This document shows that the soldier, when ordering his certificate had to be highly detailed in his descriptions of promotion, service and other important particulars, including wounds, or being captured. Most notably, Bean lists that he was "taken prisoner at Gettysburg, July 2d and escaped same night", along with his being at, "1st Bull Run, Siege of Yorktown, Fredericksburg 1st and every battle of the Regiment afterwards…[and] detailed for duty in the Freedman's Bureau, Special Order…by Genl. S. S. Carroll, Aug. 31, 65." He enlisted on June 3, 1861 as a private in Company C, 2nd New Hampshire. He rose through the ranks to captain in the same company, and was discharged on Dec. 19, 1865. A true hero! Negligible center fold, else near fine, extremely rare as very few are encountered in the marketplace.
