CDV of Major Theodore Winthrop, believed the first Union Officer of rank killed in battle. He served with the 7th New York Infantry during Big Berthel, where he was killed in action on 10 June 1861. Historical accounts convey Major Winthrop rallied his troops by exclaiming “One more charge boys, and the day is ours.'' Soon thereafter, he was killed by a musket ball to the heart, shot by black Confederate soldier Sam Ashe, 1st North Carolina Infantry. stamped on the reverse by Rockwood;. Very good.
