Davenport, William (1787-1858) He began his service during the War of 1812 when he was commissioned as a Captain in the 16th United States Infantry. With his unit he rendered distinguished service at the Battles of Chippewa (July 5, 1814) and Lundy's Lane (July 25, 1814). He remained in the United States Army after the war, receiving the brevet of Major on September 28, 1822 for "ten years of faithful service". He was transferred from the 16th Infantry to the 6th Infantry on December 16, 1825, and to the 1st Infantry on April 4, 1826, receiving a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in the process. He fought in the Aug. 1-2, 1832 Battle of Bad Ax, which resulted in the defeat of Black Hawk and ended the Black Hawk War. Brevetted Colonel, he was was transferred back to the 6th Infantry, then back again to the 1st Infantry before he resigned on January 31, 1850.
