Personal letter, 6pp., Concordia Kansas, August 16, 1874, with original cover, VG. In part, “I suppose you have heard of the ravages of the grasshoppers and global destruction of the crop of this country. Our corn and potatoes bid fair for a good crop until about three weeks ago when the grasshoppers began to make theri appearance. they came from the North in clouds. the air seemed to be alive with little pests. About noon they commenced to light and by night I do believe there was as much as one hundred and fifty bussels of grasshoppers to the acre on all the corn fields, so you can imagine how long it would be to destroy the crop. ... There are at the present hundred families leaving the country daily, going east to winter and to produce seed for another season. ... If I could sell out for what my claim has cost, I would set sail for California ... I hear there is some sharks around buying all the claims they can get for a song ora few dollars ...”
