War-date Confederate officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Lieut. Mann Page [WIA Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9, 62], 21st Virginia Infantry, "Hd. Qrs., 21st Regt. Va. Infantry, Camp near Pijah Church, March 19th, 1864," to his uncle, David Copeland Randolph, reading, in part: "…when I was in Richmond I paid Geo. Harrison [Jeff Davis' private secretary] the amount due him…I canceled the amount of State Stock borrowed from him by paying $3000 dollars in the present currency. He was very willing to take it as he wants money at this time & declined to take it in State Stock…which would have cost me more than twice what I sold it for. I borrowed of Ran a thousand dollars drawing interest on my C. S. stock…I went up to Kenswick…to get my horse which has been there ever since I went on furlough…as the weather gets a little warmer I want to send my blankets & extra clothes…for we will be allowed very little transportation this summer and if we should go into Pennsylvania I hope to obtain things n the best terms. We are quite comfortable in camp but in the eating department we are sadly deficient as we are only allowed to buy 1/4lb. meal…from the commissary. The men get along much better as in addition they get sugar & coffee…I am unwilling to tax your kindness but we can buy nothing about here…Mann Page." Minor toning, else VG
