War-date Confederate officer's letter, 3 1/2pp. 4to., written by Lieut. Mann Page [WIA Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9, 62], 21st Virginia Infantry, as aide de camp on Gen. Early's staff, "Hd. Qrs. Valley Dist., Staunton, Feb. 1, 1865, to his uncle, David Copeland Randolph, reading, in part: "……I was very sorry to hear that the roads were so bad that Bob [servant] could not bring me a box…we have been invited out a good deal to partake of some very fine dinners & suppers which I always accept…so far I have had a very pleasant time since we moved our Hd. Qrs. to this place. I will leave on the cars for Gordonsville tomorrow…to inspect Wickham's Cavalry Brgd…as they are complaining very much for want of forage for their horses…when Genl. Early was in front of Washington last summer I was sent to take a large number horses…that had been taken by the Cavly. and turn them over to the quartermaster department but was ordered to let any officer & soldier that was entitled to be mounted take one of these horses and pay the valuation. I took Joe with me & let him get a horse on these terms. A Major Myers (Genl. Breckinridge's a. a. Genl.) was to see that it was settled…but he has never settled with Myers of the Govt…they will have stormy time about Richd. or Geo. in a week or so as Thomas' army has been pressing over the Baltimore & Ohio road for some days and it is thought they are going to Grant…if our people will be only true to their soldiers all will be well. [Major Wilford Emory] Cutshaw's Batt. [VMI Battalion Infantry] went to Richmond this morning. They are going to Drewry's Bluffs so Copeland [C. A. Randolph] will be stationed there…Mann Page." A bit light, else VG. Also included is a manuscript, 12mo., receipt issued by Richmond Hustings Court to David Copeland Randolph for guardianship of Mann Page in 1854. Near fine. (2 documents)
