Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by William J. Gregory, 1pp. quarto, pencil, Petersburg, Virginia, April 6, 1865, addressed to Major General Warren, Commanding Department of Petersburg, and reads " Having voluntarily come into your lines and desiring to avail ourselves of the privileges extended in your order in regard to Deserters we have taken the privilege to address you this note. We desire to know Genl. if we can have the privilege of taking the oath in this city. If it is possible we would much rather do so. We reside in this city and have families which we are very anxious to see. Hoping that this will meet with your favorable consideration..." And is signed by 14 Confederate soldiers. At least 11 of these men were sent to Union prisons after this letter was sent. Fine condition. The names we were able to discern are: James T. Hughes captured April 30, 1863), Joseph C. Grantham confined at City point April 12, 1865), Benjamin Bishop (wounded July 1, 1862), Simon P. Ford, Lemuel R. Lunsford (confined April 12, 1865), George W. Belcher (confederate hospital January 1865), William J. Gregory, Robert H. Perkins wounded at the crater, confined Washington April 1865), James W. Hawkins(captured Gettysburg), James W. Lewis (POW April 10, 1865) and William H. Royall (captured April 1865).
