Bascom, 14th Vermont, 3pp. octavo, on George McClellan patriotic stationery, May 15, 1863, and reads in part: "...There was a squad of rebel cavalry got through our lines some how the other day and captured from the 13th Regt 18 horses and mules. They (the 13th Teamsters) were going to Fairfax Station after provisions when they were taken. Charley Goodrich was here yesterday. He said that a part of the Cavalry followed those Rebs so close that they abandoned their horses and took refuge in an old stone mill towards Drainsville. Our men could not get them out without losing more men than they wished to. So sent for two pieces of artillery & was going to shell them out of their hole. Charles said the report was that our men had taken them all prisoners. Fifty in number. It is reported here about old Mosby is dead. He is the one that gobbled up Gen. Stoughton last winter..."
