Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 2pp. 4to., 2nd Lt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. H, 1st West Virginia Cavalry, "Hd. Qrs. 2d Brig. 10 miles from Charleston, [West] Va." May 1, 1864, to his mother, in part: "We are off on a Raid…we are ordered to…move, very light, early in the morning…tomorrow we leave all our transportation…staff and all must carry nothing but what is on their horse back…watch the newspapers…about General Averell's command…Gen. Averell is our division commander…we shall…be very near him. His staff and ours marched tougher today and are camped together tonight…the Adjutant of my regiment was badly ruptured a day or two since and had to be sent away. Col. Capehart told me he should try to get me away from the staff to act as regimental adjutant until his adjutant should resign…my staff position is so pleasant [but] still it seems wrong to refuse promotion…your own boy Wilmon W. Blackmar, Provost Mar. 2d Brid. Cav. Div…Dupont, W. Va." Near fine.
