PALMER, James Shedden (1810-1867) was an officer in the United States Navy during the Civil War. He was later promoted to rear admiral. Manuscript Letter Signed "J.S. Palmer" as Commodore, 1pp. quarto, U.S. Naval Headquarters letterhead, May 7, 1864, addressed to Ensign H.L. Ransom at New Orleans and reads "You are hereby detached from the U.S.S. Antona and you will report to Lt. Comdr Jos. SKerrett Comdg U.S.S. Aroostook for duty..." Signed at bottom "Reported 8th May 1864 Jo. Skerrett Lt. Comdr." Fine condition. Rear Admiral Joseph Salathiel Skerrett (1833-1897) was an officer in the United States Navy. He participated in one of the most successful actions of the African Slave Trade Patrol, fought in the American Civil War, twice played a prominent role in the history of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and served as Commander of the Pacific and Asiatic Squadrons. He had the reputation of being the best navigator in the U.S. Navy in his day.
