LONGSTREET, James (1821-1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his "Old War Horse". He served under Lee as a corps commander for most of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, and briefly with Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed "J. Longstreet Lt. Gen." 2pp. octavo, Head Quarters Petersburg, March 12, 1863, addressed to Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry(1825-1903) member of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States and served on the staffs of General Johnston and General Wheeler, it reads in part: "...I regret that I have not been able to visit your hon'l body assembled in Congress to acknowledge my obligations for their distinguished consideration. I feel that I should neglect important public duties for personal gratification; were I to visit Richmond for such a purpose. Yet I fear that it may be thought that I do not properly appreciate the compliment you have so generously bestowed. It will be my pleasure and I regard it a duty to avail myself of the first opportunity to comply with the invitation...I agree with you about the management of impressments but suppose we will be obliged to have patience and are with them...."
