Autograph Letter Signed, "J.F. Cumming" 1p. quarto, Office District Commissary, Macon, Georgia, December 22, 1864, with cover addressed to W.H. Neill, Agt. It reads "Sir, You will report at once for duty to Major G. L. Gillespie C.S. in Ala. So soon as I get my department organized, I shall advise you and order you to report back to this office for orders. …" Approved January 31, 1865 "R.G. Wright, Comd'g Post, Union Springs, Alabama." VG. Major R. G. Wright was a fighting officer in the 27th Alabama, Army of the Tennessee. The unit was active from Dec. 1861 to the final surrender of Gen. Scott's/Gen. Shelley's Brigade on April 26, 1865. Major Wright enrolled in the 27th Alabama as Captain of Company B and was Commanding officer of the 27th in the latter stages of the war. His regiment was actively engaged in all the battles of the Army of Tennessee. The regiment had a reputation for great bravery and captured the colors of the 33rd New Jersey. Major James F. Cummings was a Staff Officer - Chief Commissary of Subsistence for Gen. B.F. Cheatham. He was commissioned from Georgia and is mentioned numerous times in the Official Records in his capacity. He was involved in much correspondence between Gen. J.E. Johnston & Secretary of War James a Seddon in regard to the provision of beef and pork for the army and is referred to as 'one of the most efficient Commissaries of the bureau.' It is astounding the breadth of responsibility providing supplies to Gen. Joe Johnston's ENTIRE ARMY - a man who deserved much higher rank.
