MAHONE, William (1826-1895) Assisted in the capture of the Norfolk Navy Yard, he served continually with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Appomattox Court House, except while he was recovering from his severe wound received at Second Manassas Autograph Letter Signed, "Wm. Mahone" addressed to "Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill" 2p. octavo, Anderson's Division, June 12, 1864, and reads: "General . I deem it proper to say to you, that I hope and most earnestly wish that my non-acceptance of the appointment to 'temporary rank of Major General' will not hinder, dialog or in any wise affect the promotion of D.A. Weiseger to the command of my Brigade. This I understood to have been your object. Coln. Weiseger is well entitled to this much and I am perhaps… free and frank to say that his permanent assignment at the command of my Brigade cannot and shall not act…or…interfere with me…" Pencil notation at bottom of letter reads: "Presented to E.P Davis by Maj. Ryder Captured in Gen. Hill's Head Quarters wagon at the surrender of Gen. Lee April 9, 1865." Folds, else near Fine.
