War-date Confederate Manuscript Document Signed, "Briscoe G. Baldwin" Major Arty. Com., 1p. oblong octavo, being a duplicate copy retained for records and reads "Received Sept. 24, 1862, of Maj. Chas. Richardson of Arty. Reserve Corps. At the Winchester Ord. Depot, the following ordnance and ordnance stores, viz (1) one 3-inch Rifle gun mounted. (1) one limber. (2) two sets harness. VG. Briscoe G. BALDWIN (1828-1898) born in Staunton, Virginia. Graduated from VMI in 1848. A distant kinsman of JEB Stuart who called him 'Buck' and wrote that 'he ought to be a general.' He was Commander of the Richmond Arsenal, September 1, 1861 and promoted to captain 1/2/1862 and major 6/12/1862. He served on the staff of General Robert E. Rodes, and at the battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia, he served as acting Lt. Col. of the 6th Alabama Regiment, where he was badly wounded in the lungs and praised for the highest order of soldierly qualities by General Rodes and Colonel John B. Gordon. In September 1862, he was in charge of the Confederate Ordnance Depot, at Winchester, Virginia and from November 1862 until April 1865, when he surrendered at Appomattox, he was the Chief of Ordnance on the staff of General Robert E. Lee.
