WHEELER, Joseph (1836 - 1906) Confederate major general, "Fighting Joe" was a brilliant cavalry officer who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. Autograph Note Signed "J. Wheeler Maj. Genl" 1p. octavo, Hd qrs. Cav. Corps. 5 P.M. February 2, 1865, addressed to General D.H. Hill Comdg. and reads "Scouts from Cooshanhatchee report that all the enemy have moved north from that place excepting a very small force. My Headquarters tonight will be a short distance north of Lopers X Roads on the Pocotaligo and Augusta road…" Fine.
