DAVIS, Jefferson Finis (1808 -1889) was an American politician who served as the president of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. As a member of the Democratic Party, he represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives before the American Civil War. He previously served as the United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857 under President Franklin Pierce. Autograph Letter Signed "Jeffer. Davis" as Secretary of War, 1pp. quarto, December 14, 1853, addressed to United States Secretary of the Interior Robert McClelland (1807-1880), and reads "I have been informed that the Missi. delegation have asked of you an appointment as clerk for Mr. Cook of Missi. I believe you would find him a good clerk and it would serve a good political end as showing that we do not go beyond conduct in 1852 and since in measuring the party claims of an applicant. Mr. Cook in 1851 was an 'Union Democrat' and as such elected to the legislature. He quite the organization and has been prosecuted for adhering to his old party the Democracy..." Fine condition.
