A very rare Confederate general's letter, 1p. 4to., signed by DANVILLE LEADBETTER (1811-1866) as major in the Confederate Engineer Corps, Fort Morgan, [Alabama], June 20, 1861, addressed to Alabama militia Adjutant General George Goldthwaite, reading, in part: "I enclose herewith an Abstract of disbursements and…a roll of non-payments…all relating to the repairs of Fort Morgan. The balance in my hands due to the State of Alabama is $171.25 and the amount still due for labor done is $129.10…creditors, when they turn up, will naturally look to me for payment. I would suggest that this balance be permitted to remain in my hands…with a view to the prompt settlement of such demands…very respectfully, D. Leadbetter, Maj. Engineers." Overall near fine.
