G (North Port Rifles), 11th Alabama Infantry, Camps near "Lewis House," Va., Feb. 6, 1862, to his wife Eleanor Caroline (Thompson) Steele (1825-1906), in part: "Your letter of 24th inst came today…I would have answered it in person but…it was decided…that none but lieutenants were permitted to go home as recruiting officers…I could imagine all the pleasures of home…but imagine my disappointment…when a notice was sent to camp that captains could go…[Joseph E.] McMath [WIA Salem Church, Va., 5/03/63] had the preference over me…write to the governor to demand…of the secretary of War…a settlement of my guardian account. There is $330.00 due me. I don't know when we will draw. Our regiment is in good health. Col. Moore [former Alabama Congressman and Alabama militia general, Sydenham Moore MWIA Seven Pines, Va., 31, 62] is in Richmond on business that I know of…manage all my affairs as you think best…ask old Billy Sutton to make out his act against me. Put down all the items and send [them] to me…get Srimmier[?] to settle…his note for the hire of Starlin…remember me to the little boys. Tell them to grow fast and make little soldiers…Newt. N. B. Tell Jo Smith to send me a bottle of good whiskey. I have not had any since Christmas. The article is entirely excluded from the army. N." Minor toning, else VG.
