A lengthy war-date Confederate congressman's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by WILLIAM PARISH CHILTON (1810-1871), "Ho. Rep. Conf. Congrs., Richmond, Va.," Sept. 20, 1862, to Alabama Governor John Gill Shorter, giving him some unsolicited advice, in very small part: "…I think that I shall be able to exempt the cadets in our University. There is however…a strong indisposition to extend the exemption law. Lincoln will raise his 600,000 troops…if we are not energetic…he will inflict upon us untold suffering and devastation…all is at stake and we must not squabble upon small…issues…why he should suspend the enrolling of cadets in Virginia and insist upon their enrollment in Ala. is somewhat remarkable…we have just given the enemy a terrible whipping on the plains of Manassas! What is Bragg doing? Unless he captures Buell…and takes Louisville…he will go under…now…is the time to put our state & others in a position for defense…their policy is to get into the heart of our cotton growing & slave population sections…when they…effect that we shall see trouble…why are not all our partizan rogues-our guerrillas, our trained soldiers all turned loose upon them!…the question of salt is a grave matter…a salt mine has been discovered in Louisiana where any quantity can be dug up…a full supply for the whole Confederacy…it ought at once be looked into…pardon this long letter. May God spare your life…and make your administration a lasting blessing to our people…W. P. Chilton…". VG to near fine.
