Scarce "National Society Andersonville Survivors" Veteran's Medal, 2-1/4" x 4". Elaborate pinback bronze bar at top, with celluloid insert "National Society / Andersonville Survivors". Suspended from two bronze chains is a scalloped edge, very heavy, 1-5/8" medallion with brilliant colorful celluloid insert depicting an angel hovering over two bedraggled Union prisoners, with "Hope" and "Despair", inside the Andersonville stockade. Maker's logo on reverse, Whitehead & Hoag, Newark, N. J., near fine.
