Booklet "The Redpath Lyceum" Hathaway & Pond Managers, Boston and Chicago, 1876-77, 66pp. quarto, with nice full page lithograph of the performances including one of "Great Musical Drama 'Out of Bondage' Only Colored Dramatic Company in the World." with circular pertaining to the production. It was the first full-fledged musical plays in which African Americans themselves comment on the plight of the slaves and the relief of Emancipation without the disguises of minstrel comedy. Fine condition. White Bostonian Joseph Bradford (1843-1886) was an American playwright who most famously helped write a landmark production, Out of Bondage, the first African American musical, with Pauline Hopkins and the Hyers Sisters, debuting in 1876. The production featured Sam Lucas, a famous minstrel performer of the era.
