Broadside "PRELIMINARY CHART OF BEAUFORT HARBOR SOUTH CAROLINA From a Trigonometrical Survey under the direction of A.D. Bache Superintendent of the SURVEY OF THE COAST OF THE UNITED STATES" 1854, 24x 20, conducted under the command of Lieutenant J.N. Maffitt, U.S. Navy. Excellent chart depicting the North Carolina coast from Carolina City westward through Beafurot as far as Lenoxville Point. Fine condition. John Newland Maffitt (1819-1886) was an officer in the Confederate States Navy who was nicknamed the "Prince of Privateers" due to his remarkable success as a blockade runner and commerce raider in the U.S. Civil War. During his service to the Confederacy, Maffitt repeatedly ran the blockade to carry needed supplies and captured and destroyed more than seventy prizes worth $10 to $15 million.
