A great North Carolina cavalryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on 2nd Division, 9th Army Corps, Army of the James patriotic stationery (most likely "captured" at the battle of Peebles Farm, Va.), by Quartermaster Sergeant Jonathan R. Kirkpatrick, Co. F, 5th North Carolina Cavalry, "Camp 5th N. C. Cav., Oct. 6, 64," to Miss. Berta Peace, in small part: "…permit me, as one of the many soldiers, to return…my warmest thanks for your high appreciation of [my] service…there is no soldier more than myself…than I am…and I sincerely hope that you may continue to enjoy that security & safety that your patriotism deserves. For the past ten days this command has been very active and for five successive days engaged the enemy near Petersburg; our loss has been comparatively small but nevertheless many of my comrades…have fallen…I mourn the loss of one who to me was as a brother…tis hard to give up one that sipped from the same cup…& sheltered by the same blanket…the main army of Genl. Grant is now on our right with serious intentions on the "Southside [rail]road"; I tremble for the fate of this heroic city but have all confidence in the skill & bravery that defends it. God grant that our insolent foe may not add another victim to their cruelty…this war must last until the men & means…is exhausted…our independence is a fixed fact. My noble steed was shot in battle on Friday last [battle of Peebles Farm, Va.] & I expect to start…for my home in Carolina for a fresh animal…a few more weeks will wind up the fighting for this year & if the enemy gain no advantage our command will winter in Stony Creek or that vicinity…J. R. Kirkpatrick." Toned, else VG
