WHEELER, Joseph "Fighting Joe" (1836-1906) was an American military commander and politician. He is known for having served both as a cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and then as a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War near the turn of the twentieth century. For much of the Civil War he served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles in the Western Theater. War-date Confederate General's Autograph Letter Signed "Jos. Wheeler", Tunnel Hill, April 12, 1864 to General Braxton Bragg, 2pp., quarto and reads in small part, "My last information of the enemy shows them to be stationed as follows; Sheridan and Wood's divisions of ...Army Corps and part of the 23rd Army Corps near Knoxville ... Divisions of Grangers Corp with one Brigade of Cavalry near Cleveland .... Division of Palmer's Corp this side of Missionary ridge .... Those two corps are commanded by Genl Hooker and number about 13 or 14 thousand men. ... My scouts just sent in a report that McPhearson has recently taken command ... McPhearson was recently assigned by Lincoln. ... The enemy are bringing a heavy force of Cavalry in the field this season ...." Fine condition.
