Good war-date Union Musician's, 3pp. 8vo., written by Musician William C. Eben, 88th Penn. Vols., (MWIA Antietam as ammeter of the 128th Penn. Vols.) Alexandria, Va., Oct. 20, 1861, to his brother, reading, in part: "…the Regiment is on guard in Alexandria…the Band plays twice a day an hour in the morning and a half an hour in the evening, so that we don't forget to play. We are getting along pretty good considering some of the men we have. The general off our Brigade thinks we cannot be beat around here. The name of our General is [William Reading] Montgomery (1801-1871). He is quite an old man…he will show the traitors what he can do if we get into a fight with them. Last evening there was fired a salute at…the forts and on the Man of War that lays in front of Alexandria because some of our ships run the blockade on the Potomac. One of the ships was hit in a half dozen places but no one was hurt. The[y] never returned the fire. The traitors fired over a hundred shots at or men. That shows that God is with us or at least some of our men would of been killed. The day will come when we will show the traitors who is right or wrong. The only thing that we want is more men…as soon as we have more men there will be such a fight that will shock the whole world…about you coming over here…you would better stay at home. there is plenty of older men around Reading that can fight for their country…William C. Eben…Cameron Height Guard Band, Col. G[eorge] P. McLean. [POW Centreville, Va., 9/21/62.]" Overall VG
