War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frederic S. Hunt, Co. K, 11th Vermont Vols. (later the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery), "Camp near Fort Lincoln, [Washington], Sept. 14, 1862, to his brother, in part: "…we are all well. I mean the Fairfax boys. George is on guard…I was on last night…I went on guard with Parm [to] guard a spring to keep the rebels from poisoning the water. They poisoned one spring before we came here…two died. They have to keep guard around such places for they poison everything [that] they get a chance too. Last night I went out to the place where we do our private business and just as I was coming in from there I picked a money pursue…come to look…in it…found &18 dollars and I have not found any owner for it…when coming down here I shook hands with more than fifty young ladies…we had a good time in general…at Baltimore we had enough to eat and that was good too. We thought we should have trouble at Baltimore but came through all right. We stayed there four hours and did not have any trouble. Then we started for Washington…for the last two days we have been digging rifle pits. We have dug about a mile and a half. These rifle pits are ditches that we can just see out and shoot…we would like to have the rebels attack us…we will give it to them. There is eight forts around us…one within forty rods of us…another in about a mile. We can see them on the top of every hill…we are the [?] set you ever saw…old Tucker has just in…he has got a joke on…Charley Brush. The old Colonel drove some boys out of the orchard and Tuck said that he put his mark on them…Charley wanted to know how he marked them. Tuck said…he put a U. S. on their asses…Fred. S. Hunt." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Light toning, else VG.
